Well something's come up, as usual, and I have to cancel my range trip tomorrow. Gonna shoot for one day next week.

We got more than 8" of rain last night, and our electricity has been off for 12 hours. I just started the generator. It may be a while before commercial power is restored.

Oh, and there's likely another few inches of rain expected today, which will slow down the repair crews even more.

Wow. I don’t have a generator- married 40 years and homeowner for 30 and never needed one. I’ve assigned myself to get one this summer.

I bought an indoor rated propane heater this year and I’ve used it in the garage. I think I’ll pick up another. The advice I got seemed good- you can’t heat your house on a generator if the furnace or electricity goes out in the winter.

But I don’t have a generator yet.

That's why I'll never have an all-electric house. Natural gas or propane is the only way to go for heating, cooking, and heating water. We bought a wood stove 35 years ago and have heated our house with it ever since. But with propane for cooking and water heating, we can maintain a normal level of comfort in winter power outages.

Wow, you guys are getting inundated with rain! I saw some of it on TV weather. 8"in one night, that's amazing.

I'm pleased to report that my earlier pessimistic view was inaccurate. Power was restored about an hour after I started the generator, and inbound rain looks to be scattered rather than concentrated.

How ‘clone’ is that? Dad left me an M1 Carbine and it’s just a pleasure to shoot. I’ve never really tested the limits of accuracy, so I don’t know how it groups with any certainty, but it cycles and I’ve not had any feeding issues. I don’t shoot it much.

Alpine was one of those companies like Universal, Iver Johnson, RIA and others that made commercial copies of the M1 back in the 1960s - 1970s. Most used surplus GI parts in the beginning with their own manufacture receivers and barrels. Later, when the parts ran out they made their own. Quality was spotty. Alpine also used surplus 1903A3 barrels cut and re-contoured. None of the clones were ever true milspec and most had problems. Universal was the most notorious as a problem child. Alpine seems to have been one of the better ones.

My 30 Carbine is Underwood. Hard to know if it was ever issued/carried, I guess?

Iirc, underwood is one of the more desirable ones.

Some very good info on the Underwood carbines specifically:

Mine is also an Underwood 1943. Unfortunately. it’s also a Blue Sky bring back with the heavy import stamp on the barrel. Upside is that I had an FFL back then and it only cost me 135 bucks!
