I found a unit commendation certificate today dated in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred sixty three. It's a shame to lose such family history, but only 2 family members remain. One has no idea what he'd do with the heirlooms and the other wants it all but has very little space for things. I did save the 1863 document as well as a lot of letters and postcards from the early 20th century.
I have some documentation of my maternal grandfather in the 1st and second battles of Chattanooga and his later deployment to the Dakota territory in the Indian wars, so I fully recognize the value of such historical documentation.
