Reminiscing

Posting in good morning today triggered a flood of memories. Like I said there, it's hard to imagine I was competent shooting off hand with iron sights.
The first time Will and I hunted together we were calling coyotes and we both trusted each other's abilities enough to shoot over each other's shoulders.  We'd set up facing each other on opposite sides of a draw to be able to spot cougars sneaking up on the caller.  Anyway, I'd told him about Jenny, our pet blacktail doe. She frequently showed up when I was calling and stand in the clear cut acting as a decoy. She wasn't trained but she figured things out very well.  She didn't like coyotes and really enjoyed seeing them shot.
Will was calling when he met Jenny.  She came up behind him and nuzzled the back of his neck, unbenounced to him.  You should've seen him jump!  She then walked into the clear cut and served as a decoy.  Afterwards, Will said "I've hunted deer my whole life, but this is the first time I've ever hunted with one."
After meeting Jenny I never hunted deer again. I used to think they were instinctual creatures but she taught me they are sentient critters, just like dogs.  She sure had a personality!
