Going beyond this story, I see a strategy where crime is allowed to take over and we cry out for somebody to do SOMETHING! This would set the stage for a huge police state with the citizens' blessing, an equally bad outcome in my opinion.
The term strategy sounds like tin foil hattery, but it's getting harder and harder to see it as unintended consequences.

You didn't think all those Glock switches the vermin got their hands on was an accident do you? They were available online from china and they didn't shut it down but if you were a white suburban or rural dude they came knocking on your door to take it away. Strangely they showed no interest in doing so in the democrat controlled cities and in spite of hundreds of them being taken off the street by the hundred when they are recovered at crime scenes or on perps, there are no Federal machine gun possession charges being brought against any of them.

Yeah, they want it to get so bad people beg for the government to take the guns. What they aren't counting on is The People deciding enough is enough and starting to take thugs out on their own terms. Only 40% of murders are solved nationwide and of course the bulk of the unsolved murders happen in inner cities run by democrats where soros prosecutors turn murderers loose on the regular.

You are precisely correct, they want it to get worse. Letting in any convict that shows up at the border into the country is just icing on the cake.

I don't think they will allow Trump to win or if he does win they won't allow him to be sworn in. At that point it will be game on suckers. The only way to avoid it is to get the democrats out of power and then start putting them on trial and having swift executions. Or skip the trial and just have impromptu "targets of opportunity".

I agree in principle but that's not the way conservatives do things. Despite all the evidence to the contrary we still believe,by and large, in the rule of law. I hope (I know, hope in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up faster) that it never comes to such drastic measures.  Once that point is passed it's going to be extremely difficult to come back. You'd have to have benevolent warlords but they don't exist for the most part.  We had good ones when we revolted against the British but look what happened when France tried to do the same thing. Even Robespierre wasn't pure enough eventually.
I'm too old to be a warrior but I fear for my progeny's future.  Our Constitution was written by brilliant men and I still think it's the best roadmap. 
And there's the big problem. How do we adhere to it when the commies disregard it?  Taking up arms without the rule of law only degrades the rule of law, despite the best intentions.  Believe me, I've fantasized about dozers and excavators, but that would set a horrible precedent.

Edit to add:
The idea of a police state isn't just about our small arms. While they can be useful, I'm worried about the loss of all our rights.
