Old VS Old Bourbon Taste-Off:Round 1- Part 1 - Old Crow VS Old Grand-Dad!

Bottom Line: Old Grand-Dad: John got vanilla & oak and I got the oak on the nose with no burn.Lightly sweet and spicy followed by oak and vanilla. Well balanced with very light burn. Old Crow: No burn on the nose. My first sip was bland. Sweetness up front with oak at the end. Winner: Old Grand-Dad!!

What is the ABV/proof of them??

Are they all the same as ABF/proof effects taste & “burn”

ABV = Alcohol By Volume = half Proof.

Old Crow - 40% ABV / 80 proof
Old Grand-Dad = 43% ABV / 86 proof

The amount of burn on these too were similar.

Good deal, I’ve found the higher the ABV/proof the more “burn” you get but it also has a better flavor

However, my palate is dull and needs strong flavors

For me, more burn usually overwhelms any extra flavor. We have tried some lower proof spirits that actually had more burn than some higher proof ones. Adding ice usually calms down the heat.

Guess hats why I tend to gravitate towards Rye

The worst Whisky I ever had was low proof “Wyoming” whisky the 1st year it was released, was rotgut & barley fit for making sauces & marinades

I like the spiciness of rye but not the spiciness of burn.
