accuracy - tommag - 11-13-2024 I'm not a tactical guy but an accuracy guy. Once I've achieved what I consider the pinnacle I tend to lose interest. I have a Remington 788 that shoots in the high 1s/low 2s. I've put together a few ar15s that shoot into the 2s and 3s. Man are those ar15s easy to work on, just quality barrels and slightly undersized uppers and a little thermo fitting along with good triggers. A friend issued me a challenge, build a very accurate ak47. Boy, that'd be fun but since Washington went full commie I can't buy components for any semi auto rifles here. If I won a lottery and moved to a free state like Montana I'd be all over that challenge. I wonder how long it'd take me to make an ak into a credible bench rest rifle? I would really enjoy that project. It's just a fantasy, and I don't know if I could blow out the case enough to qualify for hunter bench rest but it'd be so cool to win or even place in a bench rest match with the ugly old ak47. I know what it felt like to turn in respectable aggs with my ar15s. The guys were amazed at what I could do there. It's only a fantasy but you never know. RE: accuracy - specops56 - 11-13-2024 Because of my eyes and shaky hands I'm satisfied to still shoot minute of bad guy with a handgun. Put me behind a rifle with an optic and if I can see it I can hit it where i want it. I've never been interested in competition shooting except rimfire benchrest. Our club used to have RBR matches and I shot one but the match director quit and no one ever took his place. I didn't volunteer because I don't know enough about it. The nearest match is far enough away I'd need to spend the night there before and night of the match before coming home. Terry RE: accuracy - tommag - 11-13-2024 I need to clarify my op. I've never completed except against myself. Work never allowed me to be at the range on weekends but I used to score myself as though I was in a match. I have had club members witness my shooting and encourage me to shoot in matches but taking a weekend off meant losing an entire week of work. RE: accuracy - olfart - 11-13-2024 I competed in one HP match with an AR15 I borrowed from a friend. He said I scored "VERY well" against his regular club buddies, but he wouldn't tell me my score. He insisted I use his rifle rather than mine, because his had a 20" stainless match barrel as opposed to my off-the-shelf mil-spec. RE: accuracy - specops56 - 11-13-2024 My one and only RBR match I shot my milsurp Mossberg 44US with a BSA scope off a front rest using CCI Green Tag. My score wasn't great but not bad for my first time. Terry RE: accuracy - The Shooters Apprentice - 11-13-2024 I’ve only shot one bullseye/bench rest style match and when I was a teenager we went to the local precision rimfire club to pick up the scrap lead. This is where the high school shot at and they had the recent groups of targets out on the table. I’m looking at them while my dad talked to the guy there, and the director or whoever he was looked over and asked me what I thought of those groups. Without skipping a beat I said “I can outshoot those with my hunting rifle”. The club had Anschutz match rifles and shot delay ammo. The guy seemed a little offended and I offered to go get my rifle from the truck and prove it. The rifle I had was a Zastava bolt acrion 22 with barrel mounted irons and I had some CCI mini mags. I layed down prone and proceeded to shoot a group about half the size of all the high schoolers groups. The head of the shooting team wanted me to join after that, but I was home schooled and wasn’t allowed to participate. I doubt I could shoot like that now, even though I still have that rifle and it’s still the most accurate 22 I have ever owned. I did shoot a bit of USPSA and always struggled with the speed part. I can shoot double alplahs all day, but speed is a large part of the game, and even though I can shoot reasonably fast, I always struggled with making damn sure I had good sight pictures and shot doubles. The only 3 gun match I ever shot I took 2nd place over all and 1st in my division, and part of this was due to a 100 yard plate rack that had to be cleared with a pistol. I don’t think I still have the video, but I sent Tom videos back then of my warm ups on that plate rack. I'd consider you the shooter's mentor. RE: accuracy - The Shooters Apprentice - 11-13-2024 Oh I wouldn't say anything like that. I am a decent shot with a pistol, and I have my lucky days, but i do plenty of crappy shooting too. |
