Scope mount troubles - srjdsmith - 12-16-2024

So in the past few years, ever since Iowa grew a brain and legalized rifle hunting for deer, I stopped slinging cannon balls out of a pheasant gun. My first deer rifle was my second build (shepherded by Tack and Augie- snif I miss those guys) a AR in 450 Bushmaster. I took several deer with that rifle. I love the caliber but I don’t love hunting with an AR. So when Ruger offered an American Rifle in Bushy with a 22” barrel, I jumped at it. It has filled 1-3 tags for the last five or so years. Love this rifle.

This year I noticed that the scope shifts back & forth on the picatinny rail by about 1/32 or 1/64” It doesn’t seem to destroy accuracy, but does it bother me? IMMENSELY!

Is the rail out of spec? The cross bolts on the scope rings? It’s a Vortex scope and the guy at my LGS that mounted it usually does good work. I re-torqued everything to 20 in-lbs

Help!! What do I do?[Image: IMG-5615.jpg]

Is the scope mount Picatinny or Weaver? It does make a difference.

Make sure you have the right rings and don’t buy cheap ones.

Yeah, weavers have a slightly smaller cross bolt.
Iirc, picatinni rings have a square bodied cross bolt as opposed to the round cross bolt of the weavers.

At 100-200 yards that bit of slop should be ok but it can bother you. If I were to use Weaver rings on a picatini rail, (and I have) I'd make sure the rear one is against the rear of the slot, then force the front one against the front of the slot before tightening the rings on the scope.
As long as you still have acceptable accuracy for hunting I wouldn't curtail the hunt while waiting for the picatini rings to arrive. If your accuracy is acceptable I might even live with it as is, depending on how much season you have left

I'm pretty picky when I mount scopes. I quit buying cheap rings, and only use ones with 4 cap screws. Lap the rings and all that good stuff.

Picatinny rails are also slightly wider than weaver and some weaver rings just won't come up all the way tight.
