I think HSRacer learned this lesson without catching bullets. Seriously, it is as simple as dialing 911 and telling the TC that there is someone at your door claiming to be a cop. They can let you know in about 20 seconds if it is indeed a cop or not. If it isn't a cop, they are going to tell you "Don't answer the door, we have someone on the way and they will arrive sometime in the next 30 seconds to 12 hours.
Not saying this isn't tragic and possibly unjustified, but it is certainly Darwinesque.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have. I have a gun in my hand no matter who's at my door unless it's a friend I'm expecting. I've only had cops come to my door twice in the 21 years I've lived in this house. The first time was an FBI guy investigating one of my neighbors for a security clearance. The second was the county SWAT team dealing with the neighbor directly cross the street. Both times I had a gun in my hand when opening the door and they never knew it. No one is going to know it unless they force me to use it.
