When I used to plink

This article from the shooter's apprentice caused me to remember when I routinely stopped along the road and shot a bit.

25 years or so ago I carried my series 70 commander. It was a graduation present from my brother when I finished blet in the academy and had always been my favorite. It's gone now, economic circumstances got in the way of gun ownership. I'd like another one but colts are outrageously expensive today.
Anyway, I would frequently stop a little nw of Phoenix and plink. It's probably not a quiet back road now. I figured out sight pictures to 200 yards, with the base of the front sight even with the top of the rear one at 200, completely obscuring the soda can I was shooting at. I can't claim I hit it very often but I was always close.
As they say, practice makes perfect, even if it's just informal plinking. The old 1911s with fairly loose barrel bushings weren't ideal for accuracy but being intimately familiar with your firearm helps out a lot.

My wife still has hers she bought in 1976 because one of our instructors at the academy told us, "I carry a .45 because they don't make a .46." She had qualified with a 3" S&W 36 and hated it because at the end of each stage everyone had to wait for Dena to load one and fire. She still scored 96% in spite of that.

Only have one actual colt, an early delta elite that I don’t really shoot. I had a combat commander for a little bit, but found out it was stolen firearm and returned it to its rightful owner.

My favorite 1911 is my Ruger light weight commander. That gun is more accurate than I am, packs great, and looks good with the oversized stags that also fit my giant hands very well.

Lately though I’ve been packing a steel framed bobtailed commander in 10mm, the one shown in that article.

Those aluminum framed commanders sure balance nicely with a full mag!

When I say "used to plink" it's because all the public land around here has been closed to recreational shooting due to fire danger and slobs who carry garbage out to shoot at. The slobs are a pet peeve of mine. Don't shit in your own nest! If you brought it in you can bring it out.

The problem is they're shitting in someone else's nest.
